Welcome to the Lamb's fold
Frequently Asked Questions

1. My husband/boyfriend says if I move into a shelter, he will take my children away. Can he do that?? Or is he manipulating me to stay with him?

NO, YOU WILL NOT LOSE YOUR CHILDREN BECAUSE YOU MOVE INTO A SHELTER. Moving to a shelter is not a reason to lose custody. That has never happened to one of our residents. In fact, many children have been returned to their mothers' custody because she DID move into Lamb's Fold. This is a well-respected program recognized by the Court, the State's Attorney, DCFS and DHS as a safe and appropriate, well-supervised housing program which will help women and children in many ways.

2. How long can I stay at Lamb's Fold?

The regular program is 18 months; if you need more time to get on your feet, a 6-month extension is available upon request.

3. Can I leave before 18 months?

Definitely. This is a voluntary program. But we hope you will stay as long as you need to in order to be successful. Some women need a few months; some need a longer time. It's up to you. We're here to help you!

4. Will I have my own apartment or room?

No, the Lamb's Fold has dormitory-style sleeping rooms. Each family has its own twin-size beds, dressers, and cribs and/or youth beds as needed. There are some privacy panels, but not separate rooms.

5. Is there a fee for services at Lamb's Fold?

No. Women who have income, such as employment, are invited to contribute a small percentage of their income which can be considered "rent". This is to create a positive, current rent history so women are eligible to rent an apartment in the community when they leave Lamb's Fold. We provide a reference to future landlords confirming the resident's positive history. In a competitive renting environment, where there are very few affordable units available, a positive rent history is important to being able to rent an apartment in the future.

6. Do my children and I have to leave during the day like some shelters require?

No. This is your home. We have classes, workshops, and various events held in-house, so there are things for you to do when you're not taking care of your personal business.

7. How is the Lamb's Fold funded?

Lamb's Fold Center for Women and Children is funded primarily by private donations from individuals, churches, civic organizations, clubs, and businesses; we also receive grant funds from the City of Joliet, the State of Illinois and the Federal government. Our staff and volunteers work very hard at fundraising and hold two major fundraisers each year: a Golf Outing in August and a Banquet / Silent Auction in February. Revenue from these events generates a significant portion of our operating expenses.

8. Will people be able to find out I am there? I have an abuser and I don't want him or his family to know where I am.

No. We protect your confidentiality. We are not permitted to acknowledge a resident lives here unless she has given written consent to the staff to do so.
